Sebastian Stoll, Lithoviso stone art: The soul of stones Stone Insights: unique pictures of agate, jasper & crystal.
Agate, jasper and crystal from Hunsrück and Rheinhessen: wonders of creation from the earth’s inner darkness
Since his childhood the artist Sebastian Stoll, inspired by his father, has looked for fossils and gemstones. He has always been fascinated by the colors, shapes and structures of his finds in Hunsrück and Rheinhessen.
The creative forces and primordial laws of the cosmos manifest themselves in these volcanic rocks, created some 290 million years ago.
Over many years he has experimented to make their essence and soul visible in the inner structures of the gemstones and to capture these images visually.
He calls these artistic stone views in agate, jasper and crystal “Lithoviso”
As the basis for his artwork he searches for and selects gemstones in their raw state and collaborates with a professional gem cutter who splits them and polishes their inner surfaces.
He uses digital media to transform and intensify the unique microcosms of colors, shapes and structures. The resulting images make visible – loosely based on Goethe’s Faust – no less than what holds the world together at its core.
This transformation is a meditative and creative process that takes place over the course of several weeks. In the process he encounters the figures, forms and symbols captured in his works. They recall the art of primitive and ancient cultures as well as the mythology of the collective unconscious.
The pictures invite the viewer to dive into the mysterious inner worlds of the stone, their delicate diversity and beauty revealed to human eyes for the first time in millions of years.
The Lithoviso images are journeys of discovery to the unique microcosms deep inside the precious stones.
Each motif reflects the character of the respective stone, the chosen media allowing a variety of different forms of presentation and effects. The images are printed on canvas, photographic paper and acrylic. In addition, the artist also uses textiles, crystal glass and light installations to make the motifs tangible.
More pictures and detailed information can be found at www.lithoviso.com. There the works are also available for viewing and purchase
